Lauren Anderson's stunning career as one of the first Black principal ballerinas in America

Lauren Anderson's stunning career as one of the first Black principal ballerinas in America has been brought to the stage once again in Plumshuga, a captivating play about her life and career by Houston playwright and poet laureate Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton.

Focusing on her rise to prima ballerina in the Houston Ballet company in 1990, as well as her tumultuous personal life, Plumshuga encapsulates the significant impact Lauren Anderson made in the world of ballet during a time when Black women had virtually no representation in ballet.

Anderson has starred in a multitude of notable ballets such as Cleopatra and has inspired countless Black girls to dance, such as celebrated ballerina Misty Copeland.

"I see the way little girls look at me", says Anderson in an interview with The New York Times, "and I’ll never forget the way the little brown girls look at me. It’s with that look of “I could be her.”
